Once upon a time, lamps and lights should only drive out the darkness and provide light there where the sun could not. Today, lamps are true designer objects that not only provide brightness, but can also create interesting light worlds. Which lighting trends will remain in 2019 and which ones are brand new?
Led Remains A Must
As in 2018, LED will be a must in the coming year – every designer who does something to himself uses this lighting technology. The reason is the numerous advantages that can be used by LEDs. The lamps that use this technology are particularly energy efficient and have a long service life.
They also make for a very special living experience, because the color temperature and the ability to dimming make LED lamps the ideal lighting for the entire living and working area. In addition, more and more manufacturers are turning to LEDs and launching both home and office lighting on the market. Clear forms, new features and innovative ideas characterize the lamps and will finally prevail in 2019.
Let There Be Light!
More and more people are keen that they can spend the evenings outside in the garden or at least enjoy a bit of nature on the terrace or balcony. Sure, that the right lamps have to be present, and so many more manufacturers now have outdoor lamps in their program than a few years ago.
Particularly in demand here are the models, which are suitable both for indoor and outdoor use, such as the “Melt Surface wall and ceiling light” by Tom Dixon. Thus, the living style can be continued from the inside in individual details on the outside.
In terms of the desired power savings, many homeowners rely on motion detectors, some of which are still combined with solar. Thus, the outdoor area can be lit if necessary and is otherwise in the dark.
New Surfaces Also In 2019
Earlier – very early – there were once lamps, which had to have a screen. Made of fabric, of course, embellished with embroidery and matching the country style. Unfortunately, such fabric covers have the big disadvantage that they always look somehow grubby – the dust settles here and does not let the fabric go. How good that we finally arrived at more easy-care materials in 2018 and especially as a trend for 2019.
Now lamps and lights are made of glass, have combined wood-glass connections or rely on sustainability with cork. The designer world turns over with praise, the house and apartment owners are happy about a great living atmosphere and the down-to-earth expression of the room lighting. A new trend is concrete, which reminds the lamps a bit of industrial lighting.
A special eye-catcher are the models of Le Klint, a lighting manufacturer from Denmark. His pendulum lights look a bit like works of art from the world of origami and conjure up a delicate elegance in every home. Other interesting material combinations can be found at Hay, the manufacturer relies on lampshades made of a combination of wood and marble.
Trend: Industrial Lights
Many years ago there was this trend once again and in 2019 it will again be clearly visible: industrial lighting. They are made of steel and aluminum , do not wait with colorful details or interesting lampshades. These lamps provide their service, they are functional and rather to describe as Spartan. But they can do a lot more and combine perfectly with a modern style of living, where it is important to create an eye-catcher in the room.
The new “factory lamps” are available in a large selection, as the online shop fabriklampe-online.de shows. For every room and in different sizes, you will find lamps that are modeled on the lighting in an industrial building and that are on their own rather cold, gray and drab. But cleverly combined, they become a stylistic device, a fashion accessory and a way to deliberately differentiate themselves from the mainstream in terms of interior design.
Industrial lighting are not even mandatory for young people, the models can even be combined with the country house style that is so popular with older generations, and are the perfect break in style here. At the same time, they can also fulfill their main task and provide light wherever brightness is desired.

Color Joy For Your House
Louis Poulsen brings to the market with its lighting PH 5 Mini series great pendant lights, which score above all by their color variety. Recently, there were so many colorful lamps in 2016, the following year it was a little quieter and monochrome on the ceilings. 2019, on the other hand, offers all color lovers a wonderful opportunity to get a splash of color in the design of the room with the help of lights and lamps.
Whether the individual lampshade is colorful or consists of only one color is a matter of taste. How good that many designers jump on this trend and bring appropriate lamp collections on the market. So for every style of living there is the perfect lamp that not only pleases, but also meets the latest trends.
Mobility Under Lamps
Whether in 2018 or in the coming year: Mobile light is in demand and can also be seen at international trade fairs. If you want to sit in one of the armchairs while reading, you simply take your reading light with you! Portable lights make it possible and allow individual use. For example, the manufacturer Foscarini from Italy, whose “Filo” can be rolled up and unrolled and can thus easily wrap around objects. Light wherever it is needed!
Since many people like to sit outside on a mobile lighting, there are also the battery lights by Fatboy. They carry the sonorous names “Bolleke” and “Thierry le Swinger” and was explicitly designed for outdoor use. Why should mobility only be enough for the phone and not for the lighting? Modern designer lamps show that this is possible.
Chandeliers were for a long time only something for dining rooms or living rooms in which guests were received. But given the variety of different chandelier variants, these could be maintained in other rooms. (# 03)
Robustness Meets Elegant Design
Chandeliers were for a long time only something for dining rooms or living rooms in which guests were received. But given the variety of different chandelier variants, these could be maintained in other rooms. Especially in 2018 they have experienced a massive upswing and are not only conventionally designed, not least thanks to Soren Rose and other well-known designers. A dusty image does not exist anymore, today there is a new type of lamp that has been significantly reduced and almost spartan.
But this robust design with a slightly industrial touch makes the chandeliers an absolute must-have for 2019. They are noble because they are outlandish and simply new. They testify to a sense of style and a sense of modern elegance.
Robust yet noble are also the new lamps, which come from the crafts and were handcrafted. Foscarini is one of those manufacturers that focus on handcrafting and natural materials on the one hand, on concrete and industrial design on the other.
Trend: Imposing Eye-Catchers And Huge Shapes
Lamps and lights do not have to hide, as the trends for 2019 clearly show. They also can not, because the modern large forms are the eye-catcher par excellence in every room. Tom Dixon or Flos showed at Euroluce in Milan how big lamps really can be. They are almost sculptures that adorn the room and incidentally provide sufficient lighting. Or are they lamps that serve as decorative accessories?
From whatever perspective you look at the new large forms, no eye is missed. These lighting variants are perfectly tailored to the object sector, huge scale and a trend whose future is particularly interesting. For whether such large forms can still really prevail after 2019, remains questionable.
Short Overview: Which Lamp Trends Are Valid For 2019?
The following list shows again in short form which lamp trends are announced in 2019 and with which an apartment or an office can be made homely and modern at the same time:
- LED as a light source for every area
- Outdoor lamps in all shapes, suitable for indoor as well as outdoor use
- industrial design
- Sculptural design
- Mobile lamps and lights
- Robust yet elegant lamps
- Handmade lights
- Material combinations and new surfaces
- Splash of color and color joy
The new trends are easy to summarize: there is something for every taste and there is nothing that does not exist. The world of lamps already showed where the journey is going in 2018 and the two years can hardly be separated. What began in 2018 will continue in 2019.
However, it remains questionable whether the trends really prevail in the home or whether the designers – as with the sculptural lamps – but a little too optimistic in the assessment of the design joy within the four walls of the target group were.
